The system is flawed but improving with painful slowness.

Once a man could be hung for stealing a loaf of bread (often quoted and true). But with the welfare safety net in place, nobody any longer has any excuse for stealing.

As for sex-crime and/or violence, only those abused as kids have any excuse; but their excuse is STILL NOT relevant because the NEED is to avoid "this scumbag walking the streets again" as you say.

In his place, I would wish to be given the option of being shot. It might surprise us how many would take it.

Punishment is not relevant either. ONLY the safety of potential victims is relevant. But the system is not based on such considerations.

It is based on interpretation of what the inflexible law says as made by law-makers apparently without close enough reference to reality, and with a self-righteous political agenda as motivation. "I am so merciful! God will love me! What a good guy am I!"

As each generation goes by, the system is supposed to slowly slowly slowly better itself. Trial and error. Recent protests (the last 30 years actually) such as yours, have led to the establishment of the Court of Criminal Appeal.

This is a step of success. Never think that you are unheard. Keep on getting the message across. Just as one letter to a newspaper or politician is taken to represent a substantial number of people who think the same but did not bother to write, your voice is given more value than just one person. Keep it up. Good work!

Refusing to talk about it is not the same as ruling it out. If anything, such evasiveness is downright sinister.

I used to think Blair was intelligent. Now I think he has lost touch with reality.

In fairness I watched PMQs yesterday and he just said he wasn't going to talk about it because nobody was considering military action against Iran. He was very unimpressive in PMQs actually - just basically took a hump and wouldn't talk about it.

In theory it sounds okay. But who decides what's 'soft' and what's not?

Let's say you go ahead with it, but the UK doesn't. That would be a signal for every gangster in creation to set up shop here and use it as a supply base for the huge UK market.

In any case, the problem would still remain with 'hard' drugs.

The fact remains that people who use illegal drugs are a major factor in the organised crime wave in this country, and as such their behaviour should be treated as criminal. Whether you like it or not, it is their drug use, their cash and their stupidity that ultimately fuels the drug trade.
